The Paris woods
By far Paris's largest greensward, this vast, forest-like park is that giant blob of green running north-south along the western edge of your city map.
Covering 2,091 acres (3.3 square miles)—with 30km of trails, 15km of bike paths (rent bikes at the zoo entrance and at the Lower Lake dock), and 28km of horse trails—there's much to explore in this formal royal hunting grounds.
Among the highlights: the pretty Pre Catalan; the rose bushes, irises, and peacocks strutting in the revamped English gardens of the Bagatelle; the small lakes, and the Shakespeare Garden (filled with plants, flowers, and trees mentioned in his plays).
Unfortunately by night much of the park has been given over to prostitutes—and other, far less salubrious creatures of the night—so don't wander after dark. There is one safe bit: the campground (yes, you can camp right in Paris).
Tips
- Planning your time:This park is massive. It would take all day just to walk all around it. Still, it's a park. Spend as long as you like.
