Musée d'Art Moderne
The Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris is Paris' (free) Municipal Museum of Modern Art
Nothing wrong with the Pompidou or the Musée d'Orsay—but if you want to get your modern art fix for free in Paris, you gotta head for the city's run gallery of 20th-century masters in the palais de Tokyo built for the 1937 International Exposition.
This museum takes the "modern" part of its name seriously. It relegates big names of the early 20th century (Léger, Delaunay, Matisse, Dufy, and Giacometti) to its "historical" section.
The real focus here in on art produced since 1960—New Realism, Fluxus, abstract expressionism, narrative figurative painting, Arte Povera, etc.—as well as a whole glut of works from the 1980s.
The core collection is free, but a regular schedule of temporary exhibits do charge admission.
Tips
- Planning your time: Modern art is highly subjective. Fans will spend an hour or two here; those with a passing interest (and a low tolerance for frequently self-indulgent and self-important art) might hurry through in 45 minutes.
