Musée de l'Orangerie

Surrounded by 360º of Monet Waterlillies

The wonderful Orangerie—originally a warming house to protect citrus trees (like, say, oranges) from frostbite during winters in the Tuileries Gardens just off place de la Concorde—is one of Paris' best secret spots.

Works by Impressionists and other early 20th century painters—Cézanne, Renoir, Picasso, Rousseau, Matisse, Derain, Modigliani—hang in the rooms upstairs while in the basement hides Monet's grandest project and most beautiful memorial: two specially-built oval rooms each set with 360 degrees of continuous Waterlillies.

This immersive bouquet was the artist's gift to the city of Paris upon his death.
