Crypt Archéologique du parvis de Notre Dame
The Archeological Crypt of Notre Dame Square showcases the origins of the city of Paris
On the far side of the parvis (the plaza in front of Notre Dame cathedral), there's an almost completely overlooked modern staircase leading down into archaeological excavations beneath Notre Dame's square that include bits of the original Celtic Parissi settlement and the ancient Roman city of Lutèce that took its place.
Not much here, really, but it's fascinating to see and fascinating to picture a small Celtic village on this island that grew to become the mighty city of Paris.
Tips
- Planning your time: There's really not that much down here. Those interested in history will be hard-pressed to spend more than 20–30 minutes down here, mostly reading informative plaques and peering at the scale model reproductions of the original Parisii village. Those with little interest in the history will wonder why they bothered.
- Free admission with a sightseeing discount card: Get into the parvis for free with either the Paris Sightseeing Pass
or the Paris Museum Pass.
