Comfy rooms, rock-bottom rates, fab location...perfect

The Hotel Mimosa, in Rome, Italy

Hotel Mimosa

(Piazza Navona/Pantheon)
The Mimosa has a golden location between the Pantheon and Piazza Navona. It's a family-run hotel that has somehow been overlooked by Rome's tourism machine, happily continuing to offer simple but sizeable, clean, and comfy simple rooms at often laughably low rates (though they can sometimes spike from €75 to €138 for a double, so be sure to check first before booking). Now that the rates at the Smeraldo have crept up, I tend to book myself in here when traveling to Rome on my own (without, you know, loads of hotels to stay in and review).

It's a comfortable old shoe of a place, everything agreeably threadbare but well cared for. Most rooms are pretty big by Rome standards, and those with multiple beds are ideal for families on a budget. The lion's share of rooms are simple but efficient, but largish rooms no. 1–3 were redone in 2002 with some quirky touches—wrought-iron or brass bedsteads, sinuous mirrors, Oriental rugs, giant ceiling beams, or brilliant blue curtains. They don't accept credit cards.
