Where Peter and Paul's Bones Hid Out

The Catacombe di San Sebastiano (Catacombs of St. Sebastian) on Rome's Via Appia Antica

Though the tunnels run for seven miles and the venerable bones of Sts. Peter and Paul were once hidden here for safekeeping, the St. Sebastian tour is one of shortest and least satisfying of all the catacombs visits.

For general info on the catacombs, click here. For info on how to get to the catacombs, see the main Appian Way page.

The highlight is a chance to see a few well-preserved Roman (not Christian) tombs from what used to be an aboveground necropolis adjacent to the catacombs. Since this pagan graveyard was buried by the centuries, the stucco decorations on the ceilings and frescoes inside were almost perfectly preserved.
