Dress like a Roman without Boutique Prices
San Giovanni is Rome's biggest used and new clothing market
Snuggled up along a stretch of the Aurelian Wall off Via Sannio are the half-covered stalls of the best used clothing and army surplus market in the city.
When my family first moved to Rome in the mid-1980s—but our household luggage sat on a Brooklyn dock for months (some kind of longshoreman's stike)—we ended up re-stocking our wardrobes here.
The pleasant side effect was that, since we were all wearing, in effect, Italian hand-me-downs, we started to blend in much more quickly than if we'd had access to our own American threads.
Off Via Sannio, near San Giovanni in Laterano
