Slovenia

dscn9952.jpg

Cathedral of St. Nicholas, Ljubljana, Slovenia
The bronze doors on Ljubljana's Cathedral of St. Nicholas, cast in honor of Pope John Paul II's visit in 1996. You can see the pontiff, his wan little smile frozen in bronze, hands gripping a "windowsill" at the top of the doors and leaning out. The odd thing about this picture is that, when I took it, not ten feet to my left was a large crowd gathered around a big-screen TV to watch the pope's funeral in a live broadcast from Rome. (See the previous photograph.) The doors themselves manage to squeeze 2,500 years of Slovenian history into one sweeping scene, from ancient Celtic pot shards at the bottom to the promise of a new nation following the disintegration of Yugoslavia at the top.
