Slovenia

Lubljanica River, Ljubljana, Slovenia
The lovely Lubljanica River, lined with baroque buildings and trees laid out by Jože Plečnik to evoke arboreally a connection with the famous domes (rounded willows) and spires (pointy poplars) of Prague, where Plečnik worked before coming home to Slovenia to overhaul the capital. Ljubljana is often (and tiresomely) touted as the alternative to Prague. While it does enjoy a similar overall look and style, and the univeristy gives it a young and vibrant air much as Prague has, calling it "the next Prague" is really stretching things a bit. This tiny capital, with just a hair over a quarter-million souls, lacks Prague’s great museums and superlative sights—but it also lacks Prague’s opressive crowds and hyper-inflated prices. Rather than believe what all the travel magazines and newspaper sections say about it being a Prague substitute, just take Ljubljana on its own merits: as another of Eastern Europe's wonderful and thoroughly underrated cities, rich in architecture and history, filled with friendly folks and easy-going cafes, retaining just enough sights to keep you entertained, and terrifcally difficult to spell.
