How to get from the Naples train station to the docks

How to get from Napoli-Stazione Centrale to Molo Beverello to catch a ferry to Capri, a private boat to the Amalfi Coast, or to board a cruise ship

To get from the main Naples train station (Napoli-Centrale) to the Molo Beverello port, you can either take a taxi or a public bus or tram.

By public transportation (€1)

To take public transit (Anm.it), you will be hopping on a tram (or maybe bus), but first you need a ticket:

  1. Buy a biglietto (ticket) at any newsstand inside the station. You want the €1 Biglietto Corso Semplice (beel-YET-toh KOR-so SEM-plee-chay), which is good for a single ride in a single single on a single form of transport (which is all you need), not the Biglietto Integrato (a.k.a. Biglietto Orario) that costs €1.50 and allows you to trasnfer within the system for up to 90 minutes.
  2. Head out of the station's front doors and cross to the far side of busy Piazza Garibaldi out front.
  3. Hop either tram 1 (preferably) or bus 151 headed to the left.
  4. Let the driver know "Molo Beverello?" when you board, and he will holler when you get to the appropriate stop. (Trust me; he knows where all the the luggage-laden tourists are going.)
  5. Stamp one end of your ticket in the little box attached to a column on the bus. Failure to do so can get you fined.
  6. The bus/tram will trundle down Corso Giuseppe Garibaldi, then turn right down Via Nuova Marina to skirt the busy port. Yours should be the sixth stop, called Colombo-Porto or Colombo-Beverello (on the tram, it's the end of the line, so that's easy).

By taxi (€11)

Taxis line up right outside the train station and charge a fixed fare of €11 to the docks (Consorziotaxinapoli.it).

By private car service (€5–€35)

A private car costs more than a taxi—though the per-person price drops dramatically beyond two people (to €5–€10 per person).

However, in exchange it saves you the time and hassle of having to line up for the public taxis with everyone else. You just look for the guy with your name on his sign, get in your car, and go.

Beware pickpockets

A note of warning: The Naples train station, Piazza Garibaldi out front, and all popular tourist transit lines (like Tram 1) are among the most pickpocket-infested places in all of Italy.

Keep you wits about you, your purse in front of you slung across both shoulders, and your hand firmly clenched on your wallet. » more

How long does the Amalfi Coast take?

Planning your time: Budget at least a day for the Amalfi Coast. Simply to drive the coast without getting out (except to change buses in Amalfi) takes at least five hours—that's three hours touring the coast from Sorrento to Salerno, plus another hour on each end to get to and from those gateway towns.

If you do want to pack it all into a single day—and actually stop and get out in a few towns—it might be best to just book a tour that picks you up at your hotel, gives you time in each of the main Amalfi Coast towns, and returns you to your hotel 6–9 hours later:

  • From Sorrento, group tours start from $40, private drivers from $60, and private tours from $90. » book
  • From Naples, group tours start from $97, private drivers from $55, and private tours from $85. » book

Otherwise, it makes far more sense to spend at least one night on the coast.

If, however, your schedule doesn't have that much leisure time, might I suggest riding the first leg—from Sorrento to Positano to Amalfi—taking a quick spin around Amalfi town, then catching a ferry either back up the coast to Sorrento or over to Capri.
