The cathedral and funky fountain of Taormina

From Piazza IX Aprile, pass under the Torre dell'Orolorgio and you'll be in the medieval section of town, where Corso Umberto eventually spills into Piazza del Duomo.

The Fountain on Piazza del Duomo Taromina's battlemented cathedral sports six huge antique pink marble columns inside and free concerts many summer evenings.

The square's centerpiece is a fantastical 1635 fountain atop which perches an odd two-legged female centaur wearing a crown and hoisting a scepter in her right hand and a globe in her left.

No one quite seems to understand the meaning or function of this Greek mythological creature dripping with the trappings of royal power—so Taormina has made it the town mascot.
