Arriving in Ragusa by train, car, plane, and bus

Ragusa is near the southern coast of Sicily near the southeast corner of the island, about an hour west of Noto and 1 to 1.5 hours west-southwest of Siracusa.

If you are not driving, the best way to get there is by bus since trains are infrequent and many require a change at Modica.

  • How to get to Ragusa by car: Ragusa is off the SS115 that runs between Agrigento, Noto, and Siracusa.
  • How to get to Ragusa by train—From Siracusa, there are seven (3 on Sunday) trains (2 hr. 25 min.), some requiring a transfer at Modica; three of them also pass through Noto (84–115 min.), sometimes with a change.
  • How to get to Ragusa by bus—From Siracusa, AST (tel. +39-0931-462-711 or 0931-464-820, www.aziendasicilianatrasporti.it) makes seven daily runs (one on Sunday) to Ragusa (1.5–3 hrs.). There are 12 buses daily (two on Sundays) from Noto (100–120 min.). From Agrigento take one of four daily (except Sunday) buses to Gela (90 min.) and transfer to one of two daily (except Sunday) AST buses to Ragusa (1 hr.). From Catania, take an hourly ETNA bus (115 min.). From Palermo, AST runs 2-4 buses daily (4 hr.)
  • How to get between RAGUSA and the Catania airport: Etna Trasporti/INTERBUS (tel. +39-095-530-396, www.etnatrasporti.it) runs hourly buses (6:10am-8:10pm) between Ragusa (Via Zama) and the Catania airport. 1 hr. 45 min.

Ragusa city layout

Ragusa is a city split in two.

The modern city of Upper Ragusa—called just "Ragusa"—is laid out in a grid on a sloping plateau.

Across a gorge from the lower end of this platueau rises the far more interesting Ragusa Ibla, the original and once-abandoned medieval-to-baroque hilltown capping a low hill, which is really what you came to see.

Ragusa train station

Ragusa's main station is at the southern edge of Upper Ragusa, off Piazza del Popolo, a 15-minute walk from Piazza San Giovanni.

To get to Ragusa Ibla from the main station, take city bus no. 1 or 3.

There's also a secondary train station below Ragusa Ibla where some trains stop.

In Ragusa, pullman coaches (inter-city buses) arrive and leave from Via Zama, between Via Ducezio and Via Teocrito, in the southern part of town just off the SP25 road. For details and contact information, see the sidebar up on the right.
