An inexpensive, old-fashioned hotel with a hidden garden in Pienza, Italy

Il Giardino Segreto is the best bargain in town.

It is a good €10 to €20 cheaper than its competitors (doubles go for €55 to €70, apartments for €67 to €120), yet it is still situated in the historical center of Pienza, in a restored 18th-century building with a wonderful inner garden with both a shady area for reading and a sunning lawn.

The seven rental units have been kept traditional Tuscan: high beamed ceilings, terracotta-tiled floors, large fireplaces, and rustic, simple, functional wooden furniture.

It looks and feels much like a Tuscan country home away from home—particularly the trio of apartments, which can sleep up to four people for less than the cost of two double rooms (or two people for about €5 more than a double).
