Daily Deal—Rio from $599
April 22, 2005
FOUR-thousand six-hundred miles of coastline. That's a lot of beach. And that's what Brazil has. And the center of Brazilian beach life is the hip, hot, happening city of Rio de Janiero. So strap on your samba shoes and pack that Portuguese phrasebook, 'cause we've got a deal that can get you a week in the party capital of South America for just $599.
It's the Reidsguides.com Daily Deal for April 22, 2005.
Though Rio is best-known for its beaches, before you slather on the sun block and stretch out on the sand, take some time to see a bit of this sprawling city.
Rio is a mosaic of distinct neighborhoods preserving colonial-era buildings, churches, and monasteries, and it sports some of the most amazing panoramas of any city in the Americas.
You can dangle your way up a cable car to the top of Sugarloaf, the postcard-perfect humpbacked mountain rising 1,307 feet above Guanabara Bay. Or ride up the even-taller Corcovado, its 2,340 feet topped by the city's iconic Cristo Redentor, a 100-foot albino Christ figure spreading his arms to bless Rio far below.
Around the south side of the Sugarloaf stretches a series of legendary beach resorts, including both overbuilt Copacabana and chic Ipanema--where, apparently, the girls are tall and tan and young and lovely (or so I've heard) . For less crowded spots of surf near town, join the cariocas--which is what Rio natives call Rio natives--at the 12-mile strand of Barra da Tijuca, which lies beyond both Ipanema and the next beach down, trendy Leblon.
But enough about fun in the sun. We're here to talk deals. And today's is a doozy--six nights of lodging on Copacabana Beach at the three-star Augusto's Copacabana hotel, breakfast daily, and roundtrip airfare not only from Miami--which is the standard cheap gateway to South America--but also from New York, Boston, or Washington DC for as little as $599.
That's right, just six hundreds bucks, so long as you can make the trip by June 9 (or between August 31 and September 25) and you're willing to fly on a Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday. Weekend flights cost more, as do departures after June 9 (but not much; those range between $639 and $779). Departures from other cities in the US are available, though those will cost a bit more.
You can book this bargain through the excellent Gate 1 Travel--there's a direct link on our Website. Just go to ReidsGuides.com and click on the Daily Deal. That's www.reidsguides.com
So get cracking! It's time to spend some time at the Copa...Copacabana with the girl from Ipanema (her name is Rio, and she dances in the sand...)
Ahem. Now, if you'll excuse me, I've got to go and try to get three separate songs out of my head. Until tomorrow's deal, thanks for listening.
