Romanesque Churches between Foggia and Manfredonia
Along the SS89 from Foggia, 9km/5.4 miles before Manfredonia, hard by the highway is the 12th-century church of S. Leonardo (tel. +39-088-549439; www.sanleonardodisiponto.it)with a gorgeously preserved portal featuring lions, griffens, saints slaying dragons, centaurs, and harvest scenes (and you don't even need a car, since the SITA bus stops right in front—though it'll be a while until the next bus comes along!)
Six km/3.6 miles further along the road to Manfredonia lies another 12th-century church, Santa Maria Maggiore di Siponto, built to replace a paleochristian basilica
[Siponto has its own station on the FS line to Manfredonia (tel. +39-0884-21-015), and there's a seasonal tourist information office at P. Santa Maria di Siponto (tel. +39-0884-541-425).]
