An old-fashioned Spanish hotels by the beach at Chipiona (near Jerez) on the Costa del Luz

Who wants to go all the way to the coast of Spain to stay in a bland, cookie-cutter chain hotel? Not me. I prefer a spot like the Playa Regla: right on the beach, but decidedly not a soul-less modern hotel complex.

The Playa Regla is a thoroughly Andalucían-looking property, 28 colonial-styled rooms converted from an early 20th century family home of white stucco, Spanish roof tiles, and wrought-iron balconies.

There's a also a roof terrace for sunset cocktails.

In high season, there's often a minimum booking of 2 nights.
