Slovenia

dscn9975.jpg

National and University Library, Ljubljana, Slovenia
The Narodna in Univerzitetna Knjižica (National and University Library), designed by Jože Plečnik and built between 1936 and 1941 on the site of the old Ducal Palace. The stone blocks— some fully rusticted, some merely rough, others smooth—that are seemingly haphazardly placed amongst the bricks are actually arranged in a complex system to represent various mathematical formulae and numerologcal constants, all of it building to a vast, architectural metaphor on the obstacles to be overcome on the route to knowledge. Either that or, you know, they just ran out of bricks. This is where they keep a copy of every book printed in Slovenian, and where students from the local univeristy go to study.
