Slovenia

dscn9982.jpg

National and University Library, Ljubljana, Slovenia
Jože Plečnik didn't just design his buildings' overall lines. Like other master architects of the Art Nouveau era (Gaudi comes to mind), he was also part craftsman, obsessed with designing every detail, right down to the chairs, trash cans, and door handles. These horsehead handles—on the front doors to the Narodna in Univerzitetna Knjižica (National and University Library)—represent Pegasus, the idea being that once you grad a hold of his mane, he'll fly you up to new levels of enlightenment. Nice sentiment, but you still have a long and steep staricase to climb all by yourself once you get inside the door (see next pitcure).
