Castello Svevo

The 13th century fortress of Bari

There are free guided tours of this massive fortress, started by Frederick II in 1233–40 and expanded by the Aragonese in the 16th century.

The castle has been refurbished to house permanent and temporary exhibitions, including the plaster casts of Romanesque sculptures (from various churches around town) installed in rooms off the central courtyard. There are also excavations of Byzantine -era remains to visit.
